COTABATO CITY – The Ministry of Health-BARMM commemorated World Mental Health Day by emphasizing the importance of achieving a healthy work-life balance, in line with the 2024 World Mental Health Awareness Campaign theme: “It is time to prioritize mental health in the workplace.”
As part of the celebration, the Mental Health Unit, led by Dr. Norman Prince Datumanong, DPCAM, unveiled the Telepsychiatry Crisis Helpline in BARMM. Dr. Datumanong highlighted the need for accessible mental healthcare across the region stating that “Today, with the launch of the Telepsychiatry Crisis Helpline, we are taking a crucial step toward making mental healthcare more available and supportive for everyone.
Together, we are building a stronger and healthier community where no one is left behind, and everyone has access to the care they deserve, ensuring that mental healthcare is not a privilege, but a right.”
Dr. Aminoding Limpao, Director of Panginam Healing and Wellness Center, reported that 15-20% of the global population experiences severe depression at some point in their lives.
In the data presented, 55 suicide cases were recorded last year, with 37 reported this year.
Additionally, last year’s data revealed nine suicide cases among those aged 10-19, seven among those aged 20-30, six among those aged 31-40, and five cases among those aged 41-70.
This year, there has been an increase of three additional suicide cases among those aged 10-40 and one more case among those aged 41-70.
Maguindanao registered the highest number of suicide cases within BARMM, with 36 cases in 2023 and 23 cases this year.
Self-stigma and discrimination remain significant barriers that prevent individuals from excelling and performing well in the workplace.
A poor workplace environment has also contributed to mental health issues, leading to mental breakdowns and diminished motivation.
To further support mental health initiatives, the Mental Health Unit distributed gadgets to Crisis Helpline Responders from South Upi Municipal Hospital, Datu Blah T. Sinsuat District Hospital, Datu Odin Sinsuat District Hospital, Buluan District Hospital, Iranon District Hospital, and Rural Health Units (RHUs) in Montawal, Sultan Kudarat, South Upi, Upi, Ampatuan, Datu Paglas, and Wao.
Moreover, the celebration featured the introduction of Wellness Journey Stations, including a Photobooth, Freedom Wall, Ice Cream Station, Fish Ball Station, Massage Station, Bowl of Encouragement, Commitment Box, Tokens, and a Grounding Station.
These stations were designed to provide participants with moments of relaxation, comfort, and enjoyment throughout the event.
