Marawi City, Lanao del Sur — In a proactive effort to combat the rising threat of dengue fever, the Ministry of Health (MOH) recently conducted a comprehensive technical assistance program alongside an entomologic survey in selected barangays of Marawi City and Lanao del Sur.
This initiative aims to enhance local capabilities in mosquito control and disease prevention.
The program, which took place over several days, help track the distribution and density of these mosquito populations, which is crucial for assessing the risk of dengue outbreak.
During the survey the team identify potential breeding sites, stagnant water sources, where mosquito’s lay eggs. By locating and managing these sites, the mosquito population can be controlled, reducing the risk of dengue transmission.
The entomologic survey, headed by Hamen P. Calawan, RMT, MPA alongside other health officials collected data on mosquito populations and breeding habitats, which will inform future interventions. The survey results will help identify high-risk areas and guide the allocation of resources for mosquito control efforts.
“Through this technical assistance, we aim to assess the prevalence and distribution of Aedes mosquitoes, the primary vectors of dengue fever in Brgy. Poblacion of Marawi, Brgy. Calanogas, Ganassi, Pagayawan, and Balabagan Lanao del Sur. The survey focused on identifying high-risk area and evaluating mosquito populations to inform control measures,” said Johaira M. Ali, RN, MN, Regional Program Coordinator of Dengue. “Our goal is to reduce the incidence of dengue and ensure that communities are equipped with the knowledge and tools needed to protect themselves.”
Local leaders and health officials welcomed the initiative, expressing optimism about its potential impact. Barangay captain Lito Garcia emphasized the importance of collaboration, stating, “With the support of the Ministry of Health, we can create a healthier environment for our residents.”
The Ministry of Health plans to continue monitoring the situation and providing ongoing support to the communities in Marawi City and Lanao del Sur, aiming to sustain efforts in reducing dengue outbreaks and promoting public health.
