COTABATO CITY – In a resolute effort to combat the growing global threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), healthcare leaders in Maguindanao gathered on November 25, 2024, to mark Philippine Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Health in partnership with the Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO)-Maguindanao and the Maguindanao Provincial Hospital, aims to champion the responsible use of antimicrobials and safeguard their effectiveness for future generations.

Under the leadership of Ms. Abla G. Muhammad, RPh, MPA, Pharmacist V and Pharmaceutical Unit Head, the event featured a series of impactful lectures and activities designed to educate and inspire action.

Dr. Nor-aine Kansi, MPH, an Infectious Disease Specialist, delivered an eye-opening presentation titled “Antimicrobial Resistance: A Global Multifaceted Phenomenon.” Her talk underscored the grave consequences of AMR if left unchecked, emphasizing its potential to undermine healthcare systems worldwide.

Adding to the wealth of knowledge, Ms. Jillian Christine D. Ponce, a Registered Pharmacist from St. Elizabeth Hospital in General Santos City, shared best practices from their Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) program. Her insights highlighted the transformative role of AMS in preserving the efficacy of antimicrobials.

Ms. Queenie D. Romero, Registered Nurse and AMR Secretariat of the Department of Health’s Pharmaceutical Division, further emphasized the importance of embedding AMS in all levels of healthcare, from hospitals to primary care facilities.

To foster engagement and reinforce learning, the event included interactive trivia games, creating a dynamic environment for participants to deepen their understanding of AMR.

The event was a testament to the unwavering commitment of healthcare leaders in Maguindanao, led by Dr. Mohammad Ariff A. Baguindali, Provincial Health Officer II of IPHO-Maguindanao and OIC-Chief of Maguindanao Provincial Hospital. Supported by the AMS and Infection Prevention and Control Committees, the movement is set to drive awareness, collective action, and policy integration in the fight against AMR.
