SGA –The Ministry of Health-BARMM together with the International Organization for Migration successfully celebrated Family Planning Month with a theme: Panalo ang Pamilyamg Planado! Tara, usap Tayo sa Family Planning conducted in Barangay Binasing, Pahamudin Municipality, SGA.
The said activity tackles the issues of teenage pregnancy, unplanned pregnancy, the use of family planning methods, benefits of family planning for the health of the mother and its family, reproductive health, and other health services offered by the ministry regarding family planning.
According to the data, there is a 35% increase in pregnancies of girls aged 15 from 2,300 in 2021 to 3,135 in 2022. Also, 27.9% of young women aged 15 to 19 have a high unmet need for family planning.
Dr. Pancho A. Cruz, Municipal Health Officer of Pahamudin, highlighted that marriage is more than sex, it encompasses responsible parenting to nurture our children to provide their basic needs and the rights of our partners.
Dr. Ma. Melissa Miranda-Poot, IOM Family Planning Specialist pointed out that family planning is a crucial action for the development and welfare of every couple and its family, especially the children.
Meanwhile, in the Islamic perspective, Ustadha Anisa Taha-Arab, MOH-Muslim Religious Consultant emphasized that family planning is accepted in Islam in line with the FATWA or Islamic Rulings apporved by the Shariah. “Ang pagpaplano ng pamilya ay nagsisimula bago magkaroon ng asawa ang sinuman sa atin na naaayon sa katuruang Islam.”
Dr. Quraessa Mia S. Taki, MOH Family Health Cluster Head cited during her speech ” Na ang tamang pagpaplano ng pagkakaroon ng pamilya ay susi sa pagkakaroon ng balanseng populasyon sa ating komunidad sa BARMM. Ito rin ay nagsisilbing pundasyon ng mas maayos at mas mapayapang pamayanan.”
One of the participants expressed her insights on the activity, “Mas nauunawaan ko na ang kahalagahan ng family planning. Mas naging malawak ang kaalaman namin ngayon ng asawa ko kumpara noon. Kaya naging makabuluhan para sa amin na planuhin ang mga bagay-bagay para sa amin ng asawa’t mga anak namin.”

In addition, the FHC and CHO-Cotabato facilitated an interactive activity titled “Mahal, Usap Tayo” to assess the strength of the married couples in terms of their interpersonal communication with each other regarding family planning, responsible parenthood, and also to identify the appropriate family planning methods they can use.
Aside from providing education and promoting family planning to the participants, the Family Health Cluster and IOM distributed kits including contraceptive pills and condoms for the married couples who attended the event.
